Hardy's first wife, Margaret, was born and died in Detroit. It appears that she and Hardy first settled in Amherstburg, which is where their children were born. However, a move to Detroit followed their divorce; all five children died there as did Margaret.
Hardy was a Captain of a tug boat on the Detroit River. That he provided poorly for the family was a cause of great hardship.
One of the sources for this information was Geraldine C. Brush, wife of Alfred William Brush, grandson of Hardy and Margaret.
