Courtright and Corunna Centre of Road Scheme - Birthplace of Move for Development of St. Clair Drive and Blue Water Highway - Reeve G. M. Kerby Working for Project - People of District Look For Much From Development and Tourist Traffic. By Mrs. C. McKinnon:
On the banks of the St. Clair River, about 12 miles south of Sarnia is a little village, Courtright, which came into existence some 60 years ago when the Canada Southern Railway was built from St. Thomas, terminating at this point, and it was from the president of the railway, Milton Courtright, that the village recieved its name... In the midst of its prosperity an agitation to have the village incorporated met with success and in 1907, Courtright became an incorporated village with James Whitsitt as the first reeve and following him the late James Kerr, John James, the late Samuel Chowen and the present reeve, George M. Kerby.
...The delegation sent to Toronto to interview the Minister of Highways, composed of ...Alfred Hillier, reeve of Sarnia township; John Saint, mayor of Wallaceburg; ..., and Mr. Kerby, reeve of Courtright, were successful in having the River Road taken over by the Province.
During the past few weeks, Reeve Kerby has been exceptionally busy. Mr. Kerby, who was born at Florence in Euphemia Township, of Scotch and Irish parentage, was married about 40 years ago, residing in Oil Springs until 12 years ago, when he came to Courtright. While in Oil Springs, he served on the School Board for six years. He was in the Courtright Council for three years, before succeeding the late Samuel Chowen as Reeve four years ago.
In spite of his great interest and activity in assisting to promote the construction of the St. Clair River Highway, he takes a great interest in gardening. He is ably assisted his wife, formerly Miss Jennie Marchant, of Oil Springs.
Fine Driveway - The drive along the River St. Clair has always been beautiful, but with the highway following the river in closer proximity, as now under construction, it will be much improved, and there is no doubt many from nearby cities will be looking for homes or summer homes in the villages of Courtright, Mooretown and Corunna, where boating, fishing, bathing, etc., can be enjoyed. From Courtright there is easy access to the United States by ferry.
