Chatham Daily News, 19 Oct 1928:
Kent Pioneer Celebrates Anniversary. Courtright, Oct. 17 - Mrs. Hester Kerby, widow of Nelson Kerby, celebrated her 91st birthday on Sunday. Mrs. Kerby, whose maiden name was Sheply, was born near Chatham, in Buxton, Raleigh Township, and experienced those hardships and sometimes amusing incidents which all the sturdy pioneers of Canada endured.
Mrs. Kerby is in very good health considering her age, and since the death of her husband, 28 years ago, has lived practicaly alone in her comfortable home on Main street. For the past two years she has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Calgan, in Toronto, who at present is spending a few weeks here with her mother.
Mrs. Kerby always took a keen interest in her home and flowers, and is a staunch member of the United church. On Sunday she attended the morning service in the church. She has two sons and a daughter, Dr. G. W. Kerby, principal of Mount Royal College, Calgary, Mrs. T. N. Calgon, Toronto, and John, of North Bay.

Chatham Daily News, 18 September 1929:
Laid at Rest. Dresden, Sept. 18 - The funeral of the late Mrs. Hester Kerby, aged 92 years, who passed away Thursday at her home in Courtright, was held Sunday afternoon in the United church, Courtright. After the minister of the church had conducted the service her son, Rev. Dr. George E. Kerby of Calgary, spoke to the people thanking them for their many kindnesses to his aged mother who was unfortunately burned while walking in the garden, her clothes catching fire from a bon-fire. The flowers were very numerous and beautiful expressing the love and sympathy of relatives and friends to the bereaved and departed one. Among the relatives from a distance who attended were Mr. and Mrs. William Ruble, Dresden; Mr. and Mrs. John Kirby, son and daughter of North Bay; Mrs. Morley Carscallen, Toronto; Mrs. Margaret Merrill of Windsor, who was a sister. Interment was made in Union cemetery.
