Word has been received from New York, of the death of James I. Kerby, of Montreal, and formerly of Brantford. From the details accompanying the report, it would appear that possibly it is Joe Kerby, who is dead. At least, Mr. Joseph Kerby's circumstances resemble the particulars of the despatch more than do those of Mr. James Kerby.

The most sensational of the nineteenth-century Brantford newspapers was The Daily News. That publication began in 1862 under the editorship of Joseph T. Kerby, but was then sold to an American, Edward A. Percy...Percy proceeded to turn the Daily News into a scandal sheet...

The [Daily] News was a daily paper started in 1862 by Joseph T. Kerby, brother of James Kerby, who built and opened the Kerby House in 1854, and the New office was in the Kerby building, at the Colborne and George corner.
Mr. Kerby had a flair for journalism, but he lacked the financial means to carry on, and could not build it up to a flourishing enterprise. So after a few years he sold out to a newcomer from the United States, Edward A. Percy.
