Obituary, H.E.I.R.S. files (no source or date!):
Ellis Cornwall - A dreadfully sad accident happened to Ellis Cornwall, second youngest son of Sherman Cornwall, Anderdon, Tuesday afternoon about 5 o'clock and as a result, the young man died in the course of an hour or two. Mr. Cornwall and his two sons Ellis and Norman went out trapsetting that afternoon in two boats, and were returning at the above mentioned hour. Ellis and Norman were in one boat and approached the landing from the south west, running their boat in behind a log. Almost at the same time, Mr. Cornwall approached from the north but swung his boat around on the outside of the same log, facing the same way. Norman had just stepped out of the boat when in listing the boat to avoid striking the muzzle on the log, the gun in his father's boat was discharged and Ellis, who was standing in the centre of the boat preparing to get out, received the contents in his right leg, near the body. He fell over but maintained consciousness, though bleeding profusely. The family were communicated with and the wounded boy removed to the house. A physician was summoned, but Ellis passed away nearly half an hour before his arrival, so great was the flow of blood. He was not more than fifteen feet away from the gun at the time of the accident, so the load did not scatter but passed almost through his limb, leaving a gaping wound. The shock prostrated Mr. Cornwall, and the whole family are sorely grieved at the untoward end of a promising young life. The deceased was born in Colchester South on March 2nd 1882, and was one of a family of eight children. The others are Herbert, Anderdon; Herman and Fred, sailors, at home; William and Harry, in Walkerville and Norman and Pearl at home. The family moved from Colchester South about 16 years ago and purchased the Splitlog farm. They are among the most highly respected in Anderdon township and have the sincerest sympathy of a very large number of friends in their awful bereavement. The funeral was held yesterday (Thursday) afternoon to Christ Church, Amherstburg, where the rector, Rev. J. F. Parke, conducted the services. The remains were afterwards interred in Rose Hill Cemetery, the following cousins being pall-bearers: - Gus and Jos. Deneau, Fred. and Ed. Lafferty, Ross Mickle and Loftus Deneau. The cortege was a very large one, and not half the people who attended could get into the church.
