Obituary, 1901, Essex Branch of OGS files:
McCormick - In Colchester South, the oldest resident of this township died Tuesday morning, March 26th, 1901 in the person of Mrs. Alexander McCormick aged 97 years, 3 months and 2 days. The funeral will be held this Friday afternoon, leaving the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Angus Huffman, at 1 o'clock for Christ Church, Colchester where service will be conducted by Rev. T. F. Whealen, preaching from II Timothy, Chapter 4 verses 6, 7, and 8. The remains were interred in the old Episcopal Cemetery, following being pallbearers: Theron McCormick, Walter McCormick, William and George McCormick, Robert Lypps, James Brush, all nephews. The death of Mrs. McCormick closes a remarkable life, remarkable for both longevity and clearness and strength of intellect to the last. Her maiden name was Mary Lidwell and she was a daughter of the late Thomas Lidwell. She was born in the United States and came early in life with her parents to Essex County settling above Amherstburg, where they lived for some years. Here her mother died and the family moved to Colchester South. She had 3 brothers and 3 sisters: Robert died in Louisiana; Abner died in this township; Thomas lived and died on Pelee Island; Mrs. John Brush, deceased (the mother of James Brush); Mrs. John Lypps of this township, deceased, mother of Thos. Lypps, Amherstburg. In 1821 or thereabouts she was united in marriage to Alexander McCormick, who predeceased her some 29 years ago. To them were born eleven children: Nancy, Mrs. Walter Grubbe, Sr., died in Harrow April 1898; Elizabeth, Mrs. Henry Wigle, Ruthven; Mary, Mrs. Walter Grubbe, Jr., of Pelee Island; Eliza, Mrs. Angus Huffman, Colchester South; Esther, Mrs. Arthur McCormick, Pelee Island; Lucinda, Mrs. Florin Mickle, British Columbia; Margaret, Mrs. S. Hughson, Leamington; William, died in British Columbia, 22 years ago; John now in the Yukon district and Thomas and Robert of Pelee Island. They lived on the lakefront until her husband's death and 5 years ago when she came to live with her daughter, Mrs. Angus Huffman where she died. Some 3 years ago she fell and broke her hip and had been confined to bed since that time though until near the last her facilities were as alert as ever and only a few days before her death she would repeat whole poems to those who were visiting on her. She was a member of Christ Church for many years and kind memories of many charities performed during her long life will be treasured by those with whom she came in contact.
