Started teaching at a remote school up north, but took correspondence courses and eventually got a job as principal of a collegiate in Picton. Had vitiligo down one side of his body.

Born near Bowmanville, he moved to Maryborough Township in 1892 and farmed until moving to Moorefield in 1931...
His wife, the former Laura Worden, whom he married at Bowmanville in 1890, predeceased him.
