Contractor Hubbell is rushing the work on the town hall. Slaters are at work on the roof, and if fine weather prevails for a couple of weeks, the outside work will be pretty well completed.

Thamesville Herald, Thursday 16 November 1944
Charles Hubbell Laid to Rest - The funeral of the late Charles Hubbell took place last Saturday afternoon, following service at the family residence on Victoria street, conducted by Rev. John Richardson, minister of the United Church. During the service Mr. James Read, of Windsor, a nephew of the deceased, sang "He wipes the tear from every eye." Service at the graveside was conducted by members of Tecumseh Masonic Lodge.
The pallbearers were Messrs James Read, Otis Parr, Herbert Minshall, Fred. Ruckle, Fred. Parker and W. C. Hubbell. Flower bearers were Messrs Wm. Miller, Peter Fraser, H. W. Hingst, J. O. Hubbell, J. M. Coutts, Robt. Shankie, Edgar Sherman and L. D. Hubbell.
Interment was made in the Sherman Cemetery.
Mr. Hubbell had passed away at an early hour on Thursday morning, following a heart attack. He had been around as usual the day previous and when he retired about 11 o'clock was in apparent good health. Shortly after retiring he was taken ill and passed away about one o'clock in spite of all that his doctor could do to sustain life. He was well known and highly regarded in the community and leaves many to regret his death.
Deceased was born December 4, 1867, in Howard township on the old Hubbell farm and was the fourth generation to be born there. His father was the late Sylovan Hubbell and his mother, Emmiline Westfall, and they were of United Empire Loyalist stock.
Early in life, Mr. Hubbell started out as a building contractor, a business in which he has been engaged throughout his lifetime. He was also engaged in the lumber and coal business, and for the past few years he had as a business partner his son-in-law, Charles E. Brunner. In 1914, Mr. Hubbell sensed the need of an organization of lumber dealers covering a wide area. He consulted with MacPherson and Clarke of Glencoe with the result that an organization meeting was held at Chatham at the old Hotel Sanata in 1914 and Mr. Hubbell was named the first president of the Southwestern Ontario Retail Lumber Dealers' Association, and Mr. Clarke, secretary. The organization became widespread and today there is an Ontario and also a Canadian Retail Lumber Dealers' Association. About five years ago the association held a testimonial banquet here in honor of Mr. Hubbell, the first ever to be given in a small centre.
Mr. Hubbell served on the village council some years ago and has always taken an active interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the village. He was a member of the Rotary Club and fraternally was a member of Tecumseh Lodge, No. 245, A.F.&A.M., and Thamesville Lodge, No. 157, I.O.O.F. In religion he was a member of the United church and served on the board of managers over a very long period. He was also an enthusiastic bowler and was the oldest member of the club. He was kindly and genial in disposition and made hosts of friends by whom he will be greatly missed.
Mr. Hubbell is survived by an only daughter, Mrs. Charles E. Brunner (Ada), and one sister, Mrs. James Read, of Windsor. Sgt. Charles Hubbell of the Intelligence Department of the Canadian Army Overseas, and Miss Jean Hubbell, of Lansing, Mich., are nephew and niece respectively, of Mr. Hubbell, and once made their home with him. Mrs. Hubbell predeceased her husband two years ago.
