Thamesville Herald, Thursday 15 April 1909
Death of Wheeler Hubbell - A gloom was cast over the village on Saturday morning, when it was learned that Mr. Wheeler Hubbell, of the firm C & W Hubbell, and who had been ill only a few days, had crossed the bourne from which no traveller returns.
Mr. Hubbell was apparently in the best of health and spirits on Wednesday and in the evening drove out to Botany to visit some relatives. He left there late in the evening and drove home. On going to the barn about 7 o'clock new morning, his brother Charles was startled to find him lying there in a semi-conscious condition. Help was at once called and tender hands removed him to his brother's residence, where medical aid was soon in attendance. He however, lapsed into unconsciousness soon after being brought to the house from which he never rallied. The immediate cause of death was congestion of blood on the brain.
The late Wheeler Hubbell was one of the most familiar figures on the streets of Thamesville. He was engaged in the contracting business with his brother Charles, and was well-known all over the district. Besides being one of the leading business men of the town and one who took an active interest in the town's welfare and progress, the late Mr. Hubbell was a member of the Board of Health and the I.O.O.F. He was also a consistent member of the Methodist Church.
He leaves to mourn the loss of a loving father, four children, who have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community. Besides his chidren he is survived by a mother, Mrs. S. Hubbell, two sisters, Mrs. Jas Reid, Windsor, Mrs. Norman Donaldson, Kalamazoo, Mich., and three brothers, Walter of Houston, Texas; Sylovan of Windsor; and Charles of Thamesville. His wife, who was Miss Steen of Botany, pre-deceased him some five years ago. The funeral took place at 2 o'clock on Monday afternoon from the residence of Mr. Charles Hubbell, Victoria Street, and was very largely attended. A service was held in the Methodist church conducted by Rev. R. Fulton Irwin, assisted by Rev. John McInnis. Interment took place at Mayhew cemetery, the service at the grave being in charge of the I.O.O.F.
The honorary pallbearers were Messrs. William McKenzie and Lorenzo Cruickshank and the pallbearers Robt. Pye, Wm. Jackman, John Stewart, W. Watts, W. J. Cryderman and David Martin. Wreaths were sent by the Oddfellows Lodge; Rebekah Lodge; Methodist Choir and the Methodist Sunday School and Epworth League.
