Thamesville Herald Thursday 7 May 1936
Fatal Accident on Highway - Mrs. John H. Smith, an aged and highly respected resident of Zone township was almost instantly killed when hit by a motor car in front of her residence on No. 2 highway about a mile and a half east of the village, Tuesday morning about 11:40.
The unfortunate woman ahd left her premises to cross the highway to the mail box when she was struck by a west bound car, driven by Harry I. Luffman, Toronto. It is thought that she neither saw or heard the car approaching, she being 83 years old and both eyesight and hearing were faulty. In endeavoring to miss hitting her the car driver had swung to the left and ended up in the left ditch after the accident. He claims to have been driving at 40 miles per hour and saw Mrs. Smith step on the highway but thought that she intended to walk along the cement. When inspected by police after the accident the car brakes were found to be in good condition. The injured woman was carried into her home and Dr. Walker was called in. She died within an hour afterward without regaining consciousness.
Provincial traffic officer R. Clark investigated the circumstances. Corner McIlwraith and Crown Attorney Smith were notified and an inquest was considered unnecessary.
The deceased (Mary Ann McDonald) was born in Thamesville and had lived her or vicinity all her life. Sixty years ago she and John H. Smith were married and lived on a farm in Zone. Later they moved to Thamesville where they resided until about a month ago when they returned to the farm.
Besides her husband she is survived by one son, Emery, at home; one daughter, Mrs. James Cruikshanks, Windsor; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Wm. Conlin, Zone, is a sister, and John McDonald, Windsor, a brother.
The funeral will take place this (Thursday) afternoon. Service at the home will be conducted by Rev. R. C. Copeland, and interment will be made in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
