Friends Honor Ridgetown Couple On Golden Wedding Anniversary: Ridgetown --(Special)--
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert McDonald, of Ridgetown, celebrated their Golden wedding today when they received friends during the afternoon and evening.
Both Mr. and Mrs. McDonald are of pioneer families. Alexander McDonald settled on crown land in Howard Township and lived to see four generations rise. He was in his 96th year when he died. Herbert McDonald's parents were Mr. and Mrs. William McDonald. Five children still survive of a family of seven. They are, besides Herbert, of Ridgtown, Alexander, of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Maggie Coatsworth, of Dutton, Mrs. Allan Beleger of Tecumseh and Mrs. James Scane, of Ridgetown.
Mr. McDonald was born in Howard Township September 24th, 1872. On April 12, 1900 he married Miss Minnie Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David A. Smith of Kintyre, in Alborough Township. She was born in Blenheim August 10th, 1873. There are six children living in the Smith family today. They are, besides Mrs. McDonald, on brother C. Smith, of Highgate and four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Allen, of Detroit, Mrs. Henry Hillman, of Ridgetown, Mrs. Walter Guyitt, of Orford Township, and Mrs. William Moule, of Highgate.
Mr. and Mrs. McDonald have eight children. They are Mrs. David Kennedy, of Ridgetown, Arthur, Charles and Joseph all of Detroit, Mrs. T. R. Keys of Ridgetown, David of London, William of Fort Erie, and Mrs. Alma Miller of Ridgetown. There are 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The three great grandchildren arrived with their parents from Chalk River Tuesday morning.
On Sunday, the immediate family after attending the service in the Ridgetown Baptist Church, attended a dinner at the Arlington Hotel.
Herbert McDonald has held a long public career in Ridgetown. He is at present the town clerk, the position which he has held since July 1, 1920.
While still a young man, Mr. McDonald took up the printing trade. He worked for a year on the weekly paper in Ridgetown then called the Plaindealer. In 1889 he moved to Toronto and after he completing his apprenticeship, worked for a few years on the Toronto World. In 1895, he was persuaded to return to Rdigetown by Phil Bowyer who was a leading civic man in Ridgetown. He started a third weekly paper in Ridgetown called "The Dominion", the paper which outlived the other two rivals, The Plaindealer and "The Standard".
On November 5, 1895 the first edition of The Dominion hit the streets. It was delivered to the local post office by McDonald from the Dominion's back door while a policeman stood at the front with papers to serve an injunction against Editor Bowyer. After the paper was purchased by the present editor, E. V. Bingham in 1??? McDonald stayed as chief printer of the weekly shop. After his appointment as clerk of the town, McDonald worked half time in the local paper and the other half as clerk. This arrangement was not terminated until more government regulations took up the clerk's time, and he resigned from the Dominion staff in 1935 with more than 40 years printing trade to his credit.
Mrs. McDonald is an adherent of the Baptist Church. She has been active in all organizations of the church, especially with the W.M.S., the Ladies Bible class and Ladies Aid.
Both Mr. and Mrs. McDonald are in excellent health. They held open house today to their many friends. Tea was served from 3 until 5 in the afternoon and until 9 o'clock in the evening.
