Romantic Kent, p. 237 - Famous Stage Route:
A celebrated institution of Morpeth's great days was the Thamesville-Ridgetown stage. Following the construction of the Great Western Railway, this stage mail route was established in 1864. The first driver was one Ostrander, who kept the store at Selton, midway between Thamesville and Ridgetown, and who, in no great time, was succeeded as stage-driver by the Robinsons, father and son. In 1872 they gave place to Miles McDonald of Morpeth. The latter in 1876 passed it on to Duncan Campbell. In 1878 William McDonald, brother of Miles, took over, and drove the route for twelve years. Then Bob Walters assumed the reins, and, after four years, handed the contract over to "Gentleman Tom" Sheppey. After Sheppey quit, Leon Poulin drove the stage for fifteen years. Eventually, in 1913, this, one of the last of the old stage routes, discontinued operating, with the advent of rural mail delivery.
The old time stage drivers had many interesting tales to tell, of snowdrifts, deep mud, and especially spring freshets when the Thames rose above the bridge level, flooding the country for miles; when Thamesville stores were filled with water as high as the counters, and people went about in boats.
