Thamesville Herald, Thursday 18 January 1923
Drove Stage Route From Thamesville A Half Century Ago. Mr. Miles McDonald, an old and highly respected resident of the Morpeth district, died suddenly Thursday morning last. Mr. McDonald, who had been enjoying his usual health, arose around 8 o'clock, and shortly after fell to the floor dying before assistance could be secured. The late Mr. McDonald, who was 81 years old, was born in North Howard, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alex. McDonald. In early life he conducted stage routes between Morpeth and Thamesville, and later between Thamesville and Dresden. About 40 years ago, he purchased a farm just west of Morpeth, and by diligence and good management turned a run down property into one of the most valuable in the township. Besides his widow, he leaves a family of three sons, John at home and Arthur and Fred, who just a week ago returned to their homes in California, after visiting here, and two daughters, Mrs. Catharne Leibner at home and Miss Jennie, nurse in Detroit. Mrs. David Kelly of Thamesville is a sister.

Romantic Kent, p. 237 - Famous Stage Route:
A celebrated institution of Morpeth's great days was the Thamesville-Ridgetown stage. Following the construction of the Great Western Railway, this stage mail route was established in 1864. The first driver was one Ostrander, who kept the store at Selton, midway between Thamesville and Ridgetown, and who, in no great time, was succeeded as stage-driver by the Robinsons, father and son. In 1872 they gave place to Miles McDonald of Morpeth. The latter in 1876 passed it on to Duncan Campbell. In 1878 William McDonald, brother of Miles, took over, and drove the route for twelve years. Then Bob Walters assumed the reins, and, after four years, handed the contract over to "Gentleman Tom" Sheppey. After Sheppey quit, Leon Poulin drove the stage for fifteen years. Eventually, in 1913, this, one of the last of the old stage routes, discontinued operating, with the advent of rural mail delivery.
The old time stage drivers had many interesting tales to tell, of snowdrifts, deep mud, and especially spring freshets when the Thames rose above the bridge level, flooding the country for miles; when Thamesville stores were filled with water as high as the counters, and people went about in boats.
