From the Brush book (above):
Wheeler was raised in Colchester and remained there until about 1858, when he bought a 40-acre farm near the town hall in Malden. Later he owned a 200-acre farm, where he built an attractive home and farm buildings.

A successful farmer, Wheeler was a director of the So. Essex Agriculture Society and president of the Malden and Anderdon chapter. He was also active in civic affairs, especially in the Liberal Party. He held many offices in the town. He also was a leader in the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Amherstburg as a trustee.

His wife, Margaret, was born in Falkirk, Scotland. She and Wheeler were married in the Old Anglican Church in Colchester.

Toward the end of Wheeler's life, a friend wrote of him, "He was long reconciled to what he foresaw was his approaching end, and died a Christian death, all tears being cast out by a strong, clear hope of immortality." " The reverend gentlemen gave a most eloquent discourse, full of feeling, dealing with the Christian's death and glorius immortality and referring in appropriate language to the departed one." The obituary added that the procession was "the largest ever seen, almost 200 carriages being in line."
