|
In 1838 Caleb Ryan came from County Tipperary, Ireland, to Biddulph Twp, settling on Con 6. He was the son of Nathaniel and Maria (Nevin) Ryan, both of whom were then deceased. With Caleb came his step-mother, Ann (Boucher) Ryan, two sisters, Abigail and Catherine, and a half-sister Maria.
In 1846 Caleb was married to Eleanor Atkinson who had come from Ireland as a small child with her parents, John and Ellen (Spencer) Atkinson, who had settled on Con. 4, Biddulph Twp. Being a carpenter, Caleb was sometimes called on to make a coffin for a neighbour. They raised a family of four sons and five daughters. In 1881 they moved to another farm, Lot 33, Con. 4, Biddulph Twp.
Caleb died in 1885 and his wife in 1903. They are buried in St. James Cemetery at Clandeboye. Their farm is still in the family name, owned now by a grandson, Allan Ryan.
