Grew up in Ontario and joined the Canadian army and eventually settled in Vancouver. On Jan. 1, 1914 he married Margaret Elizabeth Nesbitt (a young widow; still living in Greenwood, B. C. in 1975) and had one son Brian (Nov. 1, 1914 - Jan. 4, 1972) who died of emphysema. Brian married and had three children, but the last two died as infants. The first child, Robert Arnold Kayes became a United Church Minister, married and had four sons, three of whom are: Robert, Jr., Brian and Andrew.
