Obituary, from Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Centre:
In Memory of Lorraine (Hodgins) Stewart October 19, 1925 - June 3, 2016.
In Loving Memory of Lois Lorraine Stewart 1925-2016
A service celebrating the life of Lorraine Stewart who passed away June 3, 2016 will be held Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Andrew's United Church in Keewatin.
Lorraine was born and raised in Lucan, Biddulph Township, Ontario, just north of London, Ontario. One of eight children of Wesley and Jeannie Hodgins, she attended teachers college in London, graduating in 1945. She taught school briefly in Lucan before taking a job as a teacher in Kenora for two years. She returned to southern Ontario to teach in Lucan and Goderich, but the north had set its hooks in her heart and following her marriage to Charles Bruce Stewart in 1949, they returned to Kenora in 1951 where they raised their family and were active members of many community groups over the next four decades including the local Little Theatre, Kinsmen and Kinette clubs and the local Military Institute. Lorraine returned to full time teaching in 1967, a profession she loved and was dedicated to, fully enjoying 17 years at Evergreen School teaching at various times Grade 4 through Grade 7 before retiring.
In their retirement she and Bruce travelled extensively. They covered the continental U.S. and Canada from Vancouver Island to PEI and Newfoundland and from California to Maine. North to Alaska and the Yukon and south to Florida, Texas and New Mexico were on the itinerary in their motor homes which they went through two of in their years of travelling. Trips to England and Hawaii were made.
They moved to Goderich in 1992, making it a home base for winters south in Yuma, Arizona.
When Bruce's health began to decline and travelling was curtailed, they moved to Mitchell, Ontario for a few years before returning to Kenora in 2006 to be near family and the network of friends they'd come to know over their many years in Kenora.
After Bruce's passing in 2008, Lorraine remained active with many groups including the Retired Teachers of Ontario, Pinecrest Auxiliary, Alzheimer's Society and several local card groups.
She was predeceased by her parents, Wesley in 1962 and Jeannie in 1968; her husband Bruce (2008); two sons, George Bruce (1998) and Thomas Ian (1981); sisters, Margaret (1921), Shirley (1983), and Isabelle (2002); and brothers, Milt (1965), Joe (1979), Bill (1999) and Don (2012).
She is survived by her son Bob and his wife Brenda, sister Beth Tubb and her husband Jim; sister-in-law Betty (Don) Bartolomie and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated to It's A Dogs Life, the Kenora Cat Shelter, or a charity of one's choice.
