The Hodgins book is very confused about this John. It calls him "Shoemaker" but the John living right beside Henry "Wild Harry", who you would expect to be his brother, is a farmer, not a shoemaker. It also says John married Elizabeth Hodgins, a daughter of William John Hodgins of Templemore in Tipperary, in Ireland and after her death married Margaret. Clearly he has married Eliza after Margaret's death, so this Eliza may not be that Elizabeth Hodgins at all.

This shoemaker John Hodgins does not seem to be the son of Samuel:

1851 personal census, Biddulph Twp, then Huron Co., ON, p. 2a (3):

Brown James, M, 17, born Ireland, U Presbeterian, Shoe Maker.

This John Hodgins seems more likely to be the son of Samuel, but he is not a shoemaker:
