After farming in London Twp for 10 years, in 1882 William moved to the Turtle Mountain District, now Ninga, Manitoba. He settled on the NE 1/4 of Section 26-2-19-WPM. During the Reil Rebellion of 1885 his home was the centre for the home guards, of which he was an officer. He exhibited his short horn cattle throughout the West, and helped organize the Graingrowers Co-op Assn. He was elected to the first Board of Governors of that organization and was the second President. He served as Justice of the Peace for more than 40 years and was Reeve of Turtle Mountain Municipality. He retired in 1908 and moved to Killarney, Manitoba, then returned to live with his son George until his death. He and his wife celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary in 1931.
