William settled on Lot 32, Con. 3 in 1835. In early 1837 he was a cook earning $15 per month working for a Mr. McMillan, the chief surveyor for the Canada Co. His brother Nathaniel was a chain bearer at the same time. During the McKenzie Rebellion of 1837-38 he, along with Nathaniel, was a soldier in the Simcoe Calvary, William serving as a dispatch agent. He was overseer of highways and then Collector of Taxes in 1842 when Biddulph was organized, and later was Town Clerk. In 1851 he became Reeve and held that position for 15 years. In 1863 he was on the Committee which negotiated the admission of Biddulph and McGillivray Townships into Middlesex County, and served on the Board until becoming Reeve in 1878.
In 1847, along with his brother John, he brought the first thrashing machine into the Township. He built a Hotel at the Junction of the London-Goderich Road and the London Proofline Road (Elginfield), named "Ryan House". He is mentioned in the History of Biddulph as residing there from 1835 to the then current date of 1880.
