Nathaniel came to Biddulph in 1834 to make sure reports from the Hodgins about the area were true (his mother's brothers were already there). He settled on Lot 31, Con. 3. In early 1837 he was working for a Mr. McMillan, the chief surveyor for the Canada Co., along with his brother William. He was a chain-bearer earning $13 per month with room & board. William was a cook. During the McKenzie Rebellion of 1837-38 he was a soldier in the Simcoe Cavalry (again with his brother William). When his father died he bought the south 1/2 of Lot 32 from his mother, and 1855 he purchased Lot 258 in Lucan from the Canada Co. In 1897 the farm was deeded to Nathaniel Jr.
