After a long illness he died of Parkinson's disease on 17th February 1973. The following article appeared in the Essex Free Press, following his death:

In the death of Russell A. Pettypiece the Paquette and Oldcastle residents lost one of their most popular and highly respected citizens. The deceased was a son of the late Thomas Pettypiece and Sarah Kurtz. He was born on August 28th, 1897 in the township of Anderdon on the Walker Road. He attended No. 4 Public School. The family moved to Colchester North in 1908, to lot No. 4, Concession 14. He enlisted in the Medical Corps, 99th Battalion, went overseas in 1916 and was transferred to the Railway Corps and served to the end of the War there. He returned to Canada in 1919, and farmed with his father until 1923. He married Miss Erin Shuel on March 7, 1923 and settled on the farm, now occupied by Dr. Ralph McCormick on the Walker Rd., moving to the farm across from his father in 1926, where he has resided ever since.
     He was active in community affairs, serving a number of years on School Board No. 10 and was one of the first members on the Sandwich South Township Area School Boards. He was one of the first chairmen of Essex County Farm Marketing Board, on which he served a number of years. He was Field man for the Clark Canning Company, Harrow for 10 years till he had to retire on account of ill health in 1962. He was a lifelong member of the Church of the Redeemer serving as Warden for a number of years. He was also Past Master of L.O.L. No. 552.
     He leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife, Erin, two daughters, Nancy R.N., Riverview Hospital and Janet (Mrs J. Livingstone) of Eugene, Oregon, USA, three sons, Douglas on the home farm, Brien of Niagara Falls, and Thomas of Agincourt, and a brother Harry of Essex. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Douglas and Wallace and his two sisters, Francis and Mabel (Mrs Elmer O'Neil), ten grandchildren, also survive.
     Funeral services were held in St. Stephen's Church Tuesday February 20th at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. N. A Tilford officiating. Interment was in St. Stephen's Cemetery. The pallbearers were, Donald Pettypiece, Milton Hartley, Thomas A. Pettypiece, Dr. Reginald Shuel, Bob Shuel and Edward Shuel.
