     George Jeffery, Mrs. Scratch's father, was born in Nova Scotia and was married in Ontario to Mary Ann McGuffins. They were early pioneers of Mersea township. He was shoemaker by trade, and also followed farming. He died on his farm in Mersea township in 1876, and Mrs. Jeffery, who long survived him, passed away in Michigan in 1891.
