Obituary for Esther Shippy Maynard - Chatham Planet Newspaper, Ontario, Canada - Friday, September 10, 1909 - Front Page ~THE PASSING OF ANOTHER PIONEER - Mrs Esther Maynard was one of the Oldest Settlers in the Township of Harwich~ The Blenheim News Tribune says:
Early Sunday morning at the home of her son, John Maynard, there passed away one of Harwich's oldest residents, Mrs. Esther Maynard. The deceased was 92 years and 9 days old. She was the daughter of John Shippy and born on Talbot Street, Howard Township, August 27, 1817. She was married to Manella Maynard in December, 1835. To her the hand-mill was familiar, and no doubt her lullaby was the howl of the wolf. This tended to fit her for the life which lay before, as with hopes for the future she joined her husband in the difficult task of making a home in the forest.
After a short residence in Howard they came to Harwich where she has lived ever since, moving onto the farm where she recently lived in 1854 when they had to cut away in order to build a little home. Consious of her duty and a cheerful spirit, she was loved by all, especially the sick. Toiling, rejoicing, suffering, for a number of years they spent their lives together until a stroke of affliction followed in the passing away of her husband on New Year's Day 1865, leaving her the mother of 17 children, of whom 15 still survive.
The deceased had about 75 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Being of a hardy nature she enjoyed good health until February last, but since her health has not been good. By her own request she had a birthday party given her by relatives and friends, however, only a few days before her death. She was as well as usual at that time, but took suddenly worse in the evening. Her last days were peaceful and seven of her children stood by her bed at the last moment - Contributed.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, service being conducted at the residence of Rev. Mr. Gunton, of Chatham, assisted by Mr. Wm Fleetham, of Blenheim. The pall bearers were six grandchildren, Fred Maynard, Gilbert Maynard, Manella Maynard, Ben Woods, David Woods, Alex Maynard. The Interment took place at the Newcomb cemetery.
