Obituary 1945, Essex Branch of OGS files:
W. A. McCormick Town Clerk for 19 Years, Dies - Retired From Public Office in 1937. W. A. McCormick for 19 years clerk of the Town of Amherstburg and former warden of the County of Essex, died in Metropolitan Hospital last Friday. He was 78 years old. He had been seriously ill for a couple of weeks.
The late Mr. McCormick was born in Colchester South in 1866. His parents were the late Matthew W. McCormick and the former Elizabeth Taylor. When he grew up he began clerking in the H. W. Allan general store in Harrow and later transferred to the Essex store of the same company. It was while in Essex that he was married to Annie R. Klie. Mrs. McCormick died some years ago. He returned to Harrow and entered the employ of T. R. Flood who operated a general store and he remained there until 1894 when he moved to the township and operated the home farm on which he was born. It was while there that he began his municipal career which let him to his vast knowledge of municpal affairs.
Entered Public Life - Mr. McCormick entered Public life as assessor for Colchester South. He was appointed in 1899 and held that position for five years. He acted as reeve of that township for five years and then dropped out of the race until 1914 when he was again elected reeve and the next year was chosen as Warden of Essex County. He retired from municipal politics with the unique record of never having been defeated in an election campaign.
It was in 1907 that Mr. McCormick first entered municipal politics. He defeated James Howie for the reeveship of Colchester South. On the council that year were four new members, Captain C. H. Bassett, John Wilson, Albert Bailey and George Higgins. All were new to council work and to climax the situation Joseph Drummond, the township clerk, died and the new one, Charles Arner, had to be appointed. That was probably the hardest worked council to ever sit in that township. Almost ever meeting lasted until midnight and the work might have been much harder had not Reeve McCormick been well known in the district and had some knowledge of municipal affairs.
Came to Amherstburg in 1918 - Mr. McCormick came to Amherstburg in 1918 and shortly afterwards was appointed as town clerk and treasurer, which position he held until 1937. In 1920 he was appointed Division Court clerk and Magistrate by the Drury Government. He retained the magistracy for Amherstburg until the Hepburn Government did away with local magistrates.
During his term of office as Amherstburg town clerk he carried on his duties in a capable manner. Time after time he was asked questions regarding municipal law and was usually a storehouse of information regarding the town.
Following his retirement from the employ of the town he built a small grocery store on the front of his Ramsay Street property and conducted it until his recent illness. He is survived by a daughter Mrs. Marie Aikman of Amherstburg and a son, Dr. W. Klie McCormick of Windsor. He also leaves two brothers and a sister, Dr. T. McCormick and J. A. McCormick of Windsor and Mrs. Eliza Snider of Colchester South.
Rev. H. A. Wright conducted the funeral service in Christ Church, Amherstburg, Sunday afternoon. During the service Mrs. A. Stainton sang "Teach Me to Pray" and the choir rendered two numbers "Peace, Perfect Peace" and "Abide With Me". Six nephews acted as pallbearers for interment in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Dr. Norman McCormick, Warden McCormick, Robert Klie, Archie Klie, Donald Klie and Harold Snider.
