Liisa writes:
MRS. LAWRENCE W. SHEPLEY
It is with the deepest regret we record the death of a most beloved and well known resident of this district, in the person of Mrs. Lawrence W. Shepley, who passed away at the family residence, river front, Anderdon, on Monday morning, after an illness of four months, in her seventy-first year. Deceased suffered a paralytic stroke in August and though this was followed by other strokes, her remarkable vitality survived these until just a few days previous to her demise she suffered a severer one from which she never rallied. The late Mrs. Shepley was a daughter of the Gore Atkin and Hannah Lypps, and was born at their home on the 8th concession of Malden. Her parents were from the pioneer families of South Essex. Her father lived to the age of 98, and her mother to the age of 88. She was also widely known, always taking an active part in different spheres of life which would be beneficial to the welfare of the community. Deceased was one of a family of twelve of which seven survive. They are: Miss Malvina Atkin, Sandwich; George, of Detroit; Walter, of Harrow; Mrs. Annie McGee, of Amherstburg; Robert, reeve of Malden; Wellington, of Detroit; and Edgar, of Sandwich. Mrs. Frank Beach and Miss Lucy Atkin, and two infants are deceased. She received her education in the Public Schools in Malden and Windsor High School, and upon graduation from this institution took a teacher's course in Windsor Model School, and for four years was teacher at Levergood Public School in the Lake Road, Colchester South. On January 20th, 1885 she was united in marriage to Mr. Shepley, who still survives, in the Malden Methodist parsonage, by Rev. Hodgson, and lived for some years on the farm now occupied by W.H. Bennett and family. They moved to the Naylor farm, near Essex, and from there to their present home in 1912. To Mr. and Mrs. Shepley were born six children, four of whom survive. One died in infancy, and their only son, Lieut. Gore Shepley, died in 1918 in Eastbourne Hospital, England, from effects of service in the Great War. Their four daughters are Miss Buelah Shepley, B.A., on the staff of the Goderich Collegiate Institute; Miss Evalyn Shepley, B.A., on the staff of the Amherstburg High School; Adeline, Mrs. Dewitt Derby, of Detroit; Miss Gladys Shepley on the staff of the Amherstburg Public School. Mrs. Shepley was a women of fine culture. She was widely read, and took a deep interest in the affairs of the United Church, of which she was a life-long member. The sincere sympathy of a large circle of friends is extended to the bereaved family. There was a very large assemblage of relatives and friends at the funeral on Wednesday afternnoon. A solemn service was conducted at the residence by Rev. Dr. Prudham paster of Westley United Church and Miss Katherine Golden sang "Rock of Ages". Burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, the casket being carried by six nephews: Gore, Walter, Horace, Mark and Frank Atkin and Arthur McGee.

Commemorative Biographical Record of the County of Essex, J. H. Beers & Co., Toronto, 1905, p. 77-78:
Gore Atkin, one of the pioneers of the County of Essex, and a much-esteemed citizen of Amherstburg, is of English extraction, his family fleeing to Ireland during the administration of Oliver Cromwell...
Gore Atkin was born Oct. 14, 1821, in the County of Leeds. On his return, with his father, from Illinois, he engaged in farming on the homestead place, and remained under the parental roof until twenty-four years of age, when he settled a tract of wild land in the north part of Lot 88, Concession 8, Malden township. This was a heavily timbered tract, and with much hard work he cleared it and turned it into valuable arable farms. Later he added other tracts until now he owns 191 acres, all of it situated in Malden township, and all valuable and desirable property. Mr. Atkin continued to farm until April, 1891, when he settled in Amherstburg...
On Nov. 5, 1845, Mr. Atkin was married to Miss Hannah Lypps, who was born in Colchester South, March 22, 1824, and to this union have been born these children: (1) Malvina is a resident of Detroit. (2) George, also of Detroit, married Annie McGee, and their children are Charles, Francis Gore, Horace, Robert Cink (who married Lillian Imerson), Mark, Ethel, Grace and Hannah. (3) Adeline married Francis S. Beach, of the County of Middlesex, and has three children, Francis (who married Margaret Miller and has one daughter, Doris Madeline), Kate and Harry. (4) Walter married Sarah A. McCormick, and their children are Mabel (who married Leonard Eede, and has three children, Byron Edmund, Ruby and Madeline); Gore (who married Alice Hutchins), Grace and Ellis. (5) Annie married Alexander E. McGee, and her children are Allan F., Arthur W., John S. (who married Flossie Burdick), Mary M., Margaret A. (who married Herbert Parks, and has two daughters, Marjorie and Helen), Lucy M. and Thomas Atkin. (6) Isabel, and (7) John, are both deceased. (8) Emma married Lawrence W. Shepley, a farmer in Maidstone, and their children are Beulah, Joseph Gore, Evelyn, Addie and Gladys. (9) Robert, a farmer in Malden township, married Ellen I. McGee, and has children, Maurice, Frederick, Walter, Kate, Ina and Annie. (10) Lucy lives with her parents. (11) Wellington is unmarried and lives in Malden. (12) Gore Edgar married Althea Bratt, in Malden, and their children are George D. and Ray and May, twins. Both Mr. and Mrs. Atkin are consistent members of the Methodist Church, and are among the most highly respected citizens of Amherstburg.
