OBITUARY--Amherstburg Echo, June 18, 1920
The death of George Shepley, river front, occured at an early hour Sunday. He had been a sufferer for over two years with cancer and underwent the first operation a year ago April. Relief was only temporary and successive operations availed little. Funeral services were held at the residence Tuesday afternoon by Rev. L.W. Reid, B.D., pastor Wesley Church, of which deceased had long been a member, class leader and Sunday school teacher. The remains were taken to Erie Cemetery, Colchester, and interred in the family plot, the pall-bearers being Fred and Curtis Mickle; John Parks, Frank McGee, E. Laramie and R.H. Doracy. Mr. Shepley was a native of Colchester South, the old homestead being on the Colchester Malden town line. He was a son of the late Joseph Shepley and his wife Annie Phillips. Of a family of nine four sons are yet living--Lawrence, of Anderdon; J. Edwin, of Cottam; Frank, of Sarnia, and Charles, of Detroit. The deceased members are Stephen, William, George, and two daughters who died in infancy. By a former marriage to Hannah Brush, Joseph Shepley had two children, Herman, who died young, and Mrs. Uriah Beeman, who lives in Sandwich. Mr. Shepley spent most of his life in Malden, first marrying Eva Mickle, to whom one daughter Ena, was born. Mrs. Shepley died some 30 years ago and he aftrwards married Miss Maud Wright, Daughter of the late Frank Wright, of Colchester, who with Miss Ena survives him. Ten or twelve years ago the family moved to the river front Anderdon, and later to Laird Avenue, Amherstburg, but this spring returned to the farm. Mr. Shepley took an interest in municipal affairs and served for two years as councillor of Anderdon. To the bereaved family and relatives sincere sympathy will be extended.
