The Hodgins book has two stories about James. In the chapter "Hodgins Families from Terryglass, Tipperary", p. 114, James is born about 1770, grew up in Borrisokane, moved to Terryglass, was a soldier in the British Army, married a girl named Mary and had two sons, James and Tom (who became constables in the Royal Irish Constabulary then emigrated to Canada). Tom left his family behind to come to Canada much earlier, possibly fighting in the war of 1812 but returning to Ireland after, and then was briefly in Toronto in 1816, before moving to Vermont by 1817. In the chapter "Hodgins of New York State in the 1800's and Descendants", p. 326, he is born in the late 1770s, came to Canada for the war of 1812 but stayed, spending several years in Toronto then moving to the States. He married Mary Greene and lived in Vermont, then moved to New York in the 1830s, then moved to Iowa. "James spent his last years in Iowa on the farm where his daughter Fanny kept house for him. He died at the age of 104 years." He and Mary Greene had a large family but the only names known are: George, Lucius/Lucas, Fanny (married James Wright) and William Norman.

I wonder if James the father of Peeler James and Peeler Tom really is the same James who settled in Vermont. In the 1870 US census, a Joseph Hodgins, 84, born Canada, is living with James and Frances Wright. He must be Frances' father, in which case he is indeed not the father of Peeler James and Peeler Tom.
