Liisa writes:
TRAMPLED TO DEATH BY BULL (Essex Free Press)
This community received a distinct shock on Sunday last when it was announced that Asa E. Shepley, for over forty years a resident on the Malden Road in Colchester North, had passed away at 8:30 that evening, as a result of injuries received when he was attacked by his own bull, a Holstein animal three years old. The animal, which had been tied in the barn, had got loose about 2:30 and Mr. Shepley went out to the barn to secure it. Mrs. Shepley followed a few minutes later, and Bruce, who was also at home, went out immediately after. When the former reached the barn she saw that her husband had been knocked down on the cement floor by the animal, which had also trampled on him, and the son arriving right after, the bull left his victim and went to the other end of the building. Mr. Shepley got up and was taken into the house, Drs Rogers and Keane being summoned from Essex. They gave him all possible attention finding that he had suffered some broken ribs and other internal injuries. Death resulted six hours later, deceased retaining consciousness till the last. Mr. Shepley was one of the best-known and most estimable residents of the township. He was a son of the late Sol. R. Shepley and was born in the Iler Settlement in Colchester South 58 years ago on the 21st of April. The family moved to Colchester North forty years ago and deceased has resided in the Malden Road ever since, for the past thirty three years on the farm on which he died. He was married 34 years ago to Emma Rupert, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James W. Rupert, now of Gosfield North, and to the union were born twelve children, all living, as follows:--Asa Jr., Bert, and James, of Colchester North; Milford, of Harrow; Bruce, Olive, Ray, Clifford, Velma, Pearl, Carl, and Roy, at home. He also leaves three brothers and three sisters--Vane and William, of Colchester North; Ernest, of Colchester South; Mrs. James Stevenson, of Essex; Mrs. Geo. Brush, of New Canaan, and Mrs. Marvin Moore, of Colchester South. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon and the esteem in which he was held was attested by the large number who attended same. Service was held at the family home with interment later in Kingsville Cemetery. Rev. T.C. Wilkinson officiated and the pall-bearers were R.A. Brush, A.E. Boyle, C.C. Boultinghouse, Jos. Calhoun, Geo. R. Weller and V.W. Jones. The honorary pall-bearers Wallace Shepley, Garnet Shepley, Howard Switzer, Everett Moore, Clifford Moore, Gerald Rupert. The funeral was one of the largest held in these parts in years.
