Gjertrud Maria Johns.
Hanshaugen
Full name at birth was Gjertrud Maria Johnsdatter Hanshaugen. Her
father was John and she was born on a farm named Hanshaugen. After
emigrating with her family to U.S.A. in 1867 the family name of Johnson
was assumed and she was known as Gertrude Mary Johnson. She had the
nickname of Jane or Janie and that was used in some census records. She
was a very competent person who could spin and weave and had many other
traditional skills. She spoke English with no accent but was fluent in
Norwegian to the end of her life.
