The Gosnell family is of south of Ireland nativity, and contrary to the general religious tendencies of the residents of that part of the Emerald Isle, they are Protestant in religion. Joseph Gosnell, the grandfather of Richard L., was born in Ireland, and there married Mary Webb, also a native of that locality...
James Gosnell, fifth son of Joseph, was born in Ireland April 25, 1822, and accompanied his parents to Ontario in 1832, remaining with his mother after the death of his father, and assisting her until his own marriage, in 184-, to Elizabeth Salter, daughter of Thomas Salter, also of Irish extraction. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. James Gosnell settled on a farm in Orford township, County of Kent, where they have passed together more than half a century, and are still surviving, surrounded by their many friends.
