... Thomas SALTER (b 1793 in County Cork, d 1878 in the same), married Susan TAPE (or TAEPE-TUCKER) (b 1808 died 1883, both County Cork). Thomas did coastal trading in a small vessel with his brother-in-law (probably Thomas Tape, born 1799-1801). Thomas and Susan had the following children: John, Roger, Mary, Elizabeth (b 26 June 1826 and married James Gosnell, on 17 Feb 1846, in Orford Township, Kent County, Ontario, and died 9 April 1906 in Ontario, Fanny (married Michael Dacey), Mary Ann (died infancy), William, Thomas, Michael (a carpenter on a man-of-war, dead before 1904), James, Richard, and Mary Ann #2 (who also died young).

Richard L. Gosnell, a leading barrister of the County of Kent, who for the past twelve years has been in the active practice of his profession in the town of Blenheim, is a descendant of one of the early settled families of the county.
The Gosnell family is of south of Ireland nativity, and contrary to the general religious tendencies of the residents of that part of the Emerald Isle, they are Protestant in religion. Joseph Gosnell, the grandfather of Richard L., was born in Ireland, and there married Mary Webb, also a native of that locality...
James Gosnell, fifth son of Joseph, was born in Ireland April 25, 1822, and accompanied his parents to Ontario in 1832, remaining with his mother after the death of his father, and assisting her until his own marriage, in 184-, to Elizabeth Salter, daughter of Thomas Salter, also of Irish extraction. After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. James Gosnell settled on a farm in Orford township, County of Kent, where they have passed together more than half a century, and are still surviving, surrounded by their many friends. To them were born the following named children: Susan Ann married David Latimer of Howard township, and both are now deceased. Thomas S. married Maud Walker, and resides in Winnipeg, where he is collector of inland revenue; their only daughter bears the name of Eileen. Joseph, who resides in DeKalb, State of Illinois, married Mary Mills and their three children are Byron W., Richard Roy and Glen. William A., who resides in Ridgetown, married Allie Mitton, and they have one son, Hal. John J. is unmarried and resides on the old homestead in Orford. George G. died at the age of twenty-two years. Richard L. is mentioned below. Mary Elizabeth is still at home.
