Chris writes:
Thomas Gosnell was a sailor in his youth. He owned a sloop which he had built himself, and by which he may have made his living. In 1810, when he was 40 years of age, this sloop was wrecked, and as a consequence, he may have given up his life on the sea. At any rate, he leased a farm on Sherkin Island, from the Earl of Bantry. In 1830 this lease expired and Thomas, now aged sixty, moved his family to the little townland of Ballydehob, about ten miles west of Skibberdeen. Two years later, in 1832, Thomas, Mary and their youngest children emigrated to Canada, and settled in Bathurst, New Brunswick. This was the same year that his brother, James Joseph, emigrated to Canada, and the two may well have made the crossing together.
