Richard Dobbyn (1794-1883) was educated in Dublin, Ireland and taught school. On April 20, 1815, he married Maria Bobier (1796-1869). The Catholics had confiscated his father's estate, so the young couple decided to come to Canada... Richard and Maria had 13 children, eight of whom lived to adulthood...

Richard and Elizabeth had four children: Charles Sylvester Dobbyn (1849), Alexander Richard Dobbyn (1851), Lorinda Jane Dobbyn (1853) and Mary Louisa Dobbyn (1856).
