Obituay, Chatham Evening Banner, March/April 1900:
The banner, some days ago, reported the death of William Henry Stover. The following is a more extensive obituary than has previously been published and was furnished by our esteemed correspondent at Oldfield: - It is our painful duty to record one of the saddest deaths which occurred in our midst on Wednesday evening March 8th. A gloom is cast over the entire neighbourhood and each one recalls to memory the deceased. "In the midst of life we are in death," which is only too true. The death of William Henry Stover removes one of Oldfield's most worthy and highly respected citizens. Deceased went out to the barn to do his chores and had not been very long out of the house when a neighbour came to see him. The neighbour did not see Mr. Stover about the barnyard so went to the house and enquired for him. He was assurred by Mrs. Stover that Mr. Stover was at the barn, and upon looking a second time the dead body was found. It is supposed that Mr. Stover was killed by a bull which was running loose in the yard, although there are few marks on the body to show that the deceased had met a violent death.
Wm. Stover was born in 1830, in Clearville, Township of Orford, County of Kent. When about seven years of age he came with his parents to the 8? concession of Raleigh, where he lived until 22 years of age. He then went to St. Joe, Berrien County, Mich., where was to employed by his uncle, John Bury. Shortly after he married one Miss Yerrington and bought a farm where he remained for about three years. Not being satisfied he sold out and moved to Illinois where he remained about six months, and not liking it there he went to Minnesota for a short time. In 1859 he moved to California. At that time a move to California meant more than it does today. The journey was made by ox trains, there being eight yolk of oxen to draw each train and the fare being 100 dollars. Mr. Stover gave his oxen in payment of the fare. They were six months and three days and Mr. Stover has often been heard to remark that it was one of the most enjoyable journeys that he ever made. There were three ox trains having 250 persons? in all. Among the number were three clergymen and their families, and to make everything more memorable there were three weddings during the journey. After arriving at Marriesville? the deceased was employed by Mr. Eaton and in six months time was engaged by him as foreman on his ranch of 1200 acres. The country was new them, there being no railroads the products had to be marketed by use of mules. Mr. Stover remained with Mr. Eaton four years and during that time saved a small fortune. He then returned to Canada and purchased 225 acres in Chatham township, concession thirteen where he lived and farmed until his death.
Mr. Stover was of an exceedingly happy and pleasant disposition, always wore a smile and had a cheerful word for everyone. He was ever willing to lend a helping hand to those in need and was one of the kindest and most obliging of neighbours. He was a loyal and true citizen and has left a host of friends to mourn their loss. Mr. Stover was a Methodist and in politics he was a consistent Reformer. He leaves a widow and one son Arthur, who is married a resides on the homestead, and one daughter, Mrs. Wm. Wemp, of Wheatley, also two grandchildren, Ella and Roy Ritchie, of Charing Cross. His brothers are James, Richard and Jack, of Raleigh, Joe, of Sombra; and one sister, Mrs. Rhodes, of Raleigh. The funeral was one of the largest ever witnessed in this neighbourhood which bespoke the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Knowles on Sunday afternoon at the Oldfield Methodist Church after which the cortege proceeded to the cemtery which was just opposite the church. The pallbearers were the six nephews of the deceased.
